When the Martin Andersen Nexö Cultural Center in Rüdersdorf received national funding for renovation in 2022, it was clear from the outset: alongside the furniture, the original luminaires were an essential part of the building’s museum-like charm. The authentic relics from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s were therefore to be carefully restored, with their outdated lighting technology replaced by modern LED solutions.
Refurbish Instead of Discard – Heritage-Protected Luminaires in the Rüdersdorf Cultural Center
Working with luminaires in heritage-listed buildings requires great sensitivity.
LED Retrofit
While finding suitable LED lamps for the fixtures with E27 sockets posed no problem, converting the old fluorescent luminaires to LED proved more challenging. Lighting designer Anne Boissel deliberately avoided LED strips with visible circuit boards or retrofit LED lamps, as their limited light distribution would have significantly altered the atmosphere of the rooms. Instead, HADLER’s IP-rated SL 67.2 LED luminaire and the T5 LED lamp were used. The reason: all HADLER LED lamps feature an almost identical light distribution to conventional fluorescent tubes.
Each luminaire was lovingly restored by hand, stripped of its outdated technology, and equipped with a tailored LED replacement. Existing fixtures in the cloakroom and kitchen, lanterns in the outdoor areas, and box luminaires on the columns all received a new “inner life” from HADLER.
The response from Rüdersdorf residents was overwhelmingly positive: after the LED conversion, many could hardly detect any difference in the lighting atmosphere—or even found it more pleasant than before. The sustainable, resource-conscious approach in the Rüdersdorf Cultural Center fully succeeded: this sensitive intervention preserved the unique charm of the beloved venue. Today, the “Acropolis of Rüdersdorf” (with the exception of the event hall) shines once again in new LED light.
